Sports specialism
Aireville School as a Specialist Sports College
The vision of sports colleges is to raise standards of achievement in Physical Education and sport for all students across the ability range, leading to whole school improvement.
At Aireville School we will use the specialism to develop leadership and teamwork and use challenge and competition to raise expectations across the faculties and ultimately raise attainment.
Through the development of leadership , the Sports College will provide a route from Key Stage 2 ‘Playground leaders’ to Key Stage 5 ‘Community Sports Leaders’ and provide opportunities across curriculum areas including Literacy, Numeracy and Modern Foreign Languages.
The impact on the self esteem of our leaders will breed confidence in the classroom and provide role models for all year groups. The skills learnt and qualities developed will place our students in good stead for whatever career path they choose to take on leaving Aireville School.
Specialist Sports College status will give our students a ‘Sporting Chance’ in raising self esteem, increasing participation, raising attainment and provide the opportunity to use sport as a vehicle to improve life chances.
There is a national expectation that Specialist Sports Colleges will:
- Support the Governments aspiration for all young people to have 5 hours high quality PE per week within and outside the curriculum.
- Take an appropriate role in the Physical Education, School Sport and Young People Strategy (PESSYP).
- Develop the skills and understanding of teachers and make imaginative use of new technologies as a means of raising the quality of teaching and learning in PE.
- Extend provision and facilities to benefit all students of all sporting abilities and provide opportunities for individuals to achieve the highest standards of which they are capable.
- Work with other schools and the wider community to develop and share good practice, facilities, human and other resources with a view to improving learning opportunities .e.g Ermysted’s Grammar School and Skipton Girls High School
- Be involved with national initiatives and competitions that enrich provision in PE and sport for their own students and partner schools e.g Girls Active and Top Link where we are regional centres for.
As a Specialist Sports College with Science as our second subject focus, our objectives are:
- To raise standards across the whole school.
- To raise standards in PE.
- To raise standards in Science.
- To support partner schools in raising standards in PE.
- To improve learning in sport and physical activity in the wider community.
Aireville School is the hub for the Craven School Sports Partnership that plays a pivotal role in meeting the requirement for high quality PE and School Sport its partner schools. Hosting the Partnership Development Manager offers a range of opportunities for our students and staff to engage in sport across the region.
Being a Specialist Sports College is to be part of a much wider team. The Sports College network provides opportunities for sharing good practice not only across the Yorkshire and Humberside region but also nationally. The Youth Sport Trust provides opportunities for Sports Colleges to engage in active research and benefit from the work of other Sports Colleges in order to ‘build a brighter future for young people through sport’.
