YEAR 7

 Introduction:  e-safety, e-mail and Touch Typing/Word Processing

Learners learn about e-safety and the dangers that face us on the Internet ensuring that your child is safe when chatting on the Internet, using social networking sites and texting via mobile phones.

 During most Year 7 lessons, learners also learn how to touch type to enable them to operate computers much easier.  They will learn how to use a word processor and encounter an e-mailing package.  All students at Aireville are given a free e-mail account that is monitored.

 Unit 1:  Skiing Resort – Spreadsheet and Graphs

 Learners construct a spreadsheet with graphics demonstrating the costs of equipment for a ski resort shop.  They gain an understanding of profit and loss/ income and expenditure.  They conclude by producing colourful graphs.

 Unit 2:  Saving the Planet Promotions and Safe Internet Surfing

 In this unit learners create a range of e-advertising documents suitable for A5, A4 and A3 on-screen pages including posters, flyers, 4-page booklets, newspaper articles, etc.  They have an opportunity to look at different paper sizes and of selecting appropriate publications for different purposes.  They also ensure a firm understanding of the key term, ‘Fit for Purpose’.

 In Safe Internet Surfing learners experience and gain an understanding of how to search the Internet using advanced search techniques in order to narrow down searches and find the most accurate and relevant information.

 Unit 3:  Murder Mystery Investigation

 A database is used to solve a murder mystery as learners enter information on suspects gaining the chance to take on the role of a detective who is creating a database and controlling a police computer.  Using queries they narrow down the suspects each week from new evidence until they finally work out who the murderer is.

 Unit 4:  Me! Interactive Presentation with Sound and Video

 This unit requires the learner to create a presentation using a range of sound, animation and video footage.  The presentation will be a fully interactive and multimedia experience.

 Unit 5:  Interactive Animated House/Games Production

 In this programming unit learners will learn how to create animation and write programmes that draw interactive and animated pictures with moving parts. 

 In the second part of this unit, the learners will develop skills to allow them to create a game that they can then play.

 Unit 1:  Shopping – Till Receipts and special offers

 In this unit learners will continue to develop their spreadsheet work by producing a till receipt that changes the comments and produces a voucher for those that spend over a certain amount.

 Unit 2: The Shakes – Creating an Interactive Music Web Site

 In this unit learners will develop a web site for a band called the ‘Shakes’.  They will create photo galleries, profiles on the band, music videos, lyrics, background sounds and more.  This will all be linked into a fully functional web site.

 Unit 3:  Interactive Database with buttons.

 In this unit learners will continue to build on their database skills by creating a database about cars along with a user input form and a user interface called a switchboard.

 Unit 4: Advanced Presentations – Creating an Interactive Quiz Game with sound effects and creating a cartoon Animation

 In this unit learners will create a quiz that will work automatically and check answers as well as awarding points.  Questions will be pictorial, movie or text based.  In the second part of this unit learners will create an action packed cartoon that can be watched by everyone.

 Unit 5:  Programming a Fun Fair.  Making the rides operate using programming

 In this unit learners will learn to write programmes to ensure safety on fairground rides controlled by a computer system.  They will have lots of fun making fairground rides move at different speeds while at the same time ensuring that gates are closed, addressing health and safety legislation.  They will also be able to control buttons and lights to make the rides light up in the evening.

 YEAR 9

 Unit 1:  Power Point Assessment – part of GCSE early access

 This unit starts the students on their path towards their GCSE.  They are working towards a professional excellence in the production of an E-presentation. 

 Assessment:            The online examination consists of 25 questions and counts towards their final GCSE

 Unit 2:  HTML – Learning to create a web site using programming skills

 In this unit students learn how to create a web page in HTML, giving them an understanding of the programming behind the web pages.

 Unit 3:   Movie Creating with Green Screen and special effects

 In this unit learners will develop, create and record a movie with special effects using a green screen system.  A green screen allows backdrops and a whole host of special effects to be added to a movie.  Using digital video cameras they will become a production team and make a movie which can be viewed on either television or via DVD.

 Unit 4:  FLASH – Cartoon Creating

 Building on a previous unit the students will look at developing a cartoon using FLASH.  This will involve learning a whole host of animation techniques.

 YEARS 10 AND 11

 All students study ITQ.  One unit has already been covered in Year 9 and preparation has been made for other units.  Units include, e-mailing, word processing, digital photography, animation, e-Safety, etc.  Students need to pass around 3 units to gain a grade ‘B’ at GCSE.  We do not offer every unit of ITQ as there are over 100 units in total, but we try to offer a flexible and fun coverage.  If students want to suggest a unit we are more than happy to look into it.  If a student only manages 2 units they will be awarded a half GCSE, depending upon the 2 units they have undertaken.

 Assessment:            Minimum of 3 on-line examinations for 1 full GCSE

 YEARS 10 AND 11 OPTION:
GCSE Business Communication Systems

 This course is assessed over 3 exams and over 2 years and is worth 1 GCSE. Students selecting this also undertake ITQ making a total of 2 GCSEs.

 This course covers: word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database, e-mailing, web design, image/photo editing and games creating.

Assessment:            3 Examinations, 1 Practical, 1 Controlled and 1 Theory over 2  years

 YEARS 10 AND 11:   Functional Skills – Diploma Students Only

 For those students who are undertaking a Diploma they will undertake the Functional Skills course worth half a GCSE instead of ITQ.

 This course covers word processing, spreadsheets and database.
